Statement
Kim van Erven (Nijmegen, 1984) lives and works in Utrecht. Her work focusses on the aesthetics of everyday things. To which materials, colors and substances do we feel attracted and why? When does something look delicious or irresistible? When do we feel the urge to touch an object or a certain kind of fabric?
She is fascinated by our impulse to decorate and liven up our daily surroundings, and tries to find tension between hard and soft, solemnness and frivolity, innocence and obscenity. Her sculptures and installations are abstract yet always recognisable: sweet and innocent with an equal hint of seductiveness and awkwardness. Slick and glossy yet always inviting, like a new car, a glazed cake or a bed freshly made up.
